El Corte Inglés regains its momentum thanks to the push of fashion: in the first half, fashion sales skyrocketed by 70%, to 1,744 million compared to the same period in 2020, according to a company statement . Before the pandemic fully impacted the group's accounts, the category was the main generator of sales in the retail business. “Fashion is the category that shows the best recovery, significantly impacting the recovery of ebitda,” explained El Corte Inglés in a presentation to analysts. In this way, total retail sales reached, between March 1 and August 31, 5,418 million euros , reaching 2019 levels except for the impact of tourism. The positive evolution of the group has been driven, mainly, by the improvement of the retail business, where there had been an increase of 917 million euros. In 2019, the category's income stood at 4,846 million and plummeted by 43% in 2020, to 2,768 million, according to Cinco Dias.

Group income grows 25% In general terms, the group's total income has increased by 25.1% compared to the equivalent semester of 2020, standing at 5,503 million euros. All of this, the group clarifies, despite the absence of tourism and the restrictions that still persisted for much of the period, especially in the first quarter. Likewise, the group has achieved a positive EBITDA during the first half of the year of 234 million euros, that is, 416 million more than in the same period of the previous year. Regarding net debt, it has increased to 3,940 million euros due to the effect of extraordinary payments. This is: voluntary employee separation plans, tax on large stores, various investment activities. Without counting these extraordinary items, the net debt will have been reduced by 213 million euros.
