What are Bitcoin Ordinals?
Launched in January 2023, Bitcoin Ordinals are a way to create Bitcoin NFTs by attaching data to individual satoshis (the smallest denomination of bitcoin) on the Bitcoin blockchain. Each bitcoin is made up of 100,000,000 satoshis.
The Ordinals protocol allows each individual satoshi to be identified with additional data attached and transactions made with them. This additional data can be text, images, videos or other content, and is added to each satoshi through a process called enrollment.
All of this has been made possible by Bitcoin protocol updates in the form of the Taproot (in November 2021) and SegWit (in August 2017) updates. As a result, Ordinals enrollments do not require a sidechain or separate token, and allow for the creation of authentic, immutable collections on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Thus, in the first three months after the launch of the Bitcoin Ordinals, more than one million registrations have already been made. In short, Ordinals have made Bitcoin NFTs a reality, thus creating another utility for Bitcoin beyond the mere transfer or storage of value.
