The president of the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Eurochambres), Christoph Leitl, advocated in an interview with Efe for a “trilateral agreement” between the European Union (EU), the United States and China that “stabilizes the world economy.” . The Austrian leader welcomed the principle of the Investment Agreement reached on December 30 between the community club and the Asian giant after seven years of negotiation which, in his opinion, underlines European "independence" from the American power .

If it comes into force, this bilateral agreement will improve European investors' access to the Chinese market and give them more guarantees to compete on equal terms Phone Number List with local companies. Despite the trade war that the US has had with China since 2019, the head of Eurochambres considered that “the main economic centers” in the world (China, the US and the EU) should reach a three-way agreement that allows “to approve rules for fair competition . ”

“If we need fair competition, then we can together with the Americans and the Chinese reach a trilateral agreement and that would stabilize the world economy,” suggested the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) politician. Leitl considers the president-elect of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, a “reasonable” man , which is why he hopes that transatlantic relations will be “more reliable” once he takes office on January 20.

Even so, the head of Eurochambres stressed that to obtain “respect” as trading partners, the European bloc must pursue “its own strategy” and not be part of the American one. “(Biden) declares himself the leader of the world and no, he is a partner with other parts of the world, but not the leader of the world ,” Leitl pointed out.

The end of the “political spectacle” of Brexit

Another recently reached agreement that Leitl celebrated is that of Brexit, which came a week before the transition period came to an end and the United Kingdom officially left the single market and customs union. The head of Eurochambres was relieved to have finally reached an agreement to withdraw the United Kingdom from the EU because this way “the political spectacle ends” and the way to “pragmatics” opens up .

“I think we have a basic agreement and now it will be developed and advanced step by step ,” he said after emphasizing the importance of the single market for the United Kingdom. The relationship between both parties “cannot be severed overnight” because, according to the representative of more than 20 million European companies, 50% of the United Kingdom's exports are destined for the EU, compared to 13%. which sends to the US and 2% to Japan.

In any case, Leitl was convinced that the island will rejoin projects that, in principle, it has abandoned, such as the Erasmus+ program, created to support young Europeans to study and train in other EU countries.

The comeback of tourism in Spain

Regarding the recovery from the economic crisis that has occurred with the pandemic, Leitl sees reasons for optimism in the "medium term" , specifically in the "summer" of 2021, as shown in a new study on the world economy published this Thursday by the Platform Global Commercial (GCP in English).

He assures that “the worst is already over” and that companies already see “the light at the end of the tunnel” although the regression will be palpable in the “coming months” since certain restrictive measures will remain in force to prevent the rise of infections. Regarding Spain, the also president of the Global Platform of Chambers highlighted that “hopefully” tourism will function again “almost with total normality” this coming summer period.

“It is not that the economy is sick, it is the virus that is influencing us ,” so as soon as the pandemic is controlled, thanks to the vaccination campaigns, the economy will recover, he predicted.
